Where the search is actually failing
A job search that is not working feels uniformly bad, and it usually is not. The failure has a location: applications that never get a reply is a different problem from phone screens that never become interviews, which is a different problem again from interviews that never become offers. The first is a resume and targeting problem, the second is usually a positioning problem, the third is an interviewing problem. Treating them the same wastes months.
Analytics shows conversion between stages, so the question stops being whether the search is going badly and becomes which step is losing people.
Sources and timing
Applications are grouped by where they came from - a job board, a company careers page, a referral - with the response rate for each. Referrals almost always convert better, and seeing the size of the gap in your own numbers is more persuasive than being told.
There is also time-in-stage, which is how you find the applications that have quietly stalled. Numbers here are small early on and small numbers are noisy; treat the first twenty applications as a direction, not a measurement.
